An additional helping of blessings in Memphis today. Coach Fuente is more than a coach to me. Coach Fuente is amazing. Number 28 is my nephew, my heart. Three years ago we thought we were going to lose him. Thanks to St. Jude he is here. I contacted Coach Fuente in the hope I could drop a football off to be signed for a present for Zach. I explained in my email that Zachary had been to all the games he could in the past two years and the only time he missed one was when he was sick from his chemotherapy. See, Zachary is a Tiger fan while his family is a Tennessee fan. So Tiger games are mine and his thing. I was shocked to not only receive almost an instant reply from Coach Fuente ' s office, but I actually heard from him. He didn't want to just sign a football for Zach, which truly is all I asked for. This wonderful man asked me to bring him and his friend up to his office so that they could take pictures with the trophy and meet the entire coaching staff. Bonus was that they got to try on his Rose Bowl ring. Coach Fuente brings so much class to Memphis. This was also the very day they left to go to the Miami Beach bowl. He took time out of his busy schedule to make my nephew's day!
Dear Mayor Elect Strickland,
I know this letter finds you and your family well. Congratulations on your victory. I am truly happy for you and for Memphis. Your supporters, Mike’s Supporters, and Collins Supporters were able to bring down Goliath and begin the needed change. Despite being on opposite teams, together we opened the eyes of the electorate. You knew it was beginning when the citizens began to speak, that’s why you threw your hat in. So you should know where I am going here.
Mr. Mayor elect, you have the glorious opportunity to be on the right side of history here. You can begin restoring Memphis and even begin to take us to even better places. You obviously were the candidate the majority of people of Memphis wanted and with that, it would be hypocritical of me to not give you a chance. After all, Mayor Strickland has more opportunity than Councilman Strickland.
I would like to point out that there were 58,858 votes cast against you, 34,676 of them are in favor of restoring benefits. 76,505 votes were cast in favor of lowering the crime rate. Mr. Mayor, you know that in order to bring crime down, you have to begin by restoring the benefits to retirees and active spouses. Please for a moment put yourself in our shoes. Try. Do a ride a long with an officer or even with MATA, sit in the dispatch office, go to the air port, go to your workers you will see these families deserve their benefits. In return, you will restore the outstanding Police and Fire that the country has grown to expect from Memphis, Tennessee, only then you will see your people staying on with Memphis and even retiring here to stay and still be active tax paying members of the community. You will see all of it come together. Secure employees= a better Memphis.
This is turn will help the chamber with their goals of bringing business here. We don’t have to be enemies. It doesn’t have to be US against THEM. Why can’t all 100,687 votes cast work together? Why not be on the right side of history Mr. Mayor Elect?
Please meet with Mr. Williams, Mr. Malone, and all union leaders and make this truly a NEW DAY in Memphis. Let’s start your tenure with a cooperation not seen before. You can control that. This is not a threat, this is just fact, we have 58, 858 votes to work with. We have 58, 858 people who did not want to see you take office and we have 4 years to register more. Why not find a way to have us all work together?
If your agenda is to restore Memphis, do right by the people. We are obviously willing to fight for the city and the citizens in it and are obviously willing to work. I worked on a campaign that actually made an impact in Memphis and WE did it with less than $50,000. That's some hardworking PEOPLE there. Why not work together sir? Please listen to ALL citizens. Memphis can truly be a better Memphis and you have the opportunity to go down in history as the mayor who restored it. You have an army of people willing to do their part and work hard at doing it, we are just asking to be treated with respect, dignity, and to be taken care of. Please take care of us. Please remember the families who will have to sacrifice to do the actual WORK to fulfill YOUR agenda. Our families will be the ones to sacrifice and all we want is to be taken care of. It isn’t too much to ask. It isn’t. The money is there and you out of everyone knows that. You were shown personally by two ladies who worked very hard dissecting it. Be good to us. Restore our retirement benefits and active spousal benefits. Put your family in our position, you would want them taken care of too. You would. You love them enough because they sacrifice now and now will sacrifice way more than you and they ever dreamed. You are about to be in charge of the 2nd most dangerous city in the US. We, the citizens, would want them taken care of too. They will sacrifice so much for your service. Take care of them. Take care of all of us.
Listen to the 58,858 people too, they are the majority and they have a voice too. You have an amazing opportunity here. Be on the incredible side of Memphis History sir. I hope to be a taxpaying citizen soon enough, but sir I already serve your city as an educator in Cordova and sir my husband serves in public safety. We are willing to do our part with you. Please take care of us. Do the RIGHT thing and unify your city.
Thank you for bringing a new day to Memphis and look forward to working with you or working on the next election, the choice is yours (We have plenty of time.) We are willing to be your hands and feet because we want what you want, a better Memphis. We do not have to be on opposite sides of WE THE PEOPLE.
